Power and politics are words that produce a negative reaction from many people. But power is an unavoidable aspect of our social life, as is politics. Although some people misuse their engagement with power and politics, these are such fundamental aspect of our social life that all positive outcomes also come from a structure of appropriate power and politics.
As coaches we must be competent observers of the dimensions of power and politics, it’s positive as well as negative aspects. Every client in positions of leadership, or subject to the leadership of others, faces power and politics. We want to coach people to be competent practitioners to produce positive outcomes from power and politics, and to avoid being victims of their misuse.
