Declare Yourself as a Beginner

For those of you who have attended our 3-day Foundations for Generative Leadership (FGL) Workshop, you have heard us refer to the final day, day 3, as “Launch Day” – a day where we declare we are beginners. We spend 3 days in structured practices that allow us to become familiar with actionable and observable new behaviors. This is all based on what neuroscience has taught us: in order to create new habits, we need to create new neural patterns in our nervous system. This is how Olympic athletes create embodiment and how masterful musicians create exceptional experiences for their listeners, through applied practice. 

Because it takes several thousand iterations to become masterful, at the end of 3 days, we declare ourselves to be dignified beginners. This becomes possible when we begin to learn how we each see the world and our role in it. When we declare we are beginners, we become new observers. The cultivation of our ability to observe opens new possibilities that we were previously blind to.

Through the learning at IGL, we learn to see that there are other possibilities and other ways to see and that our history (in our curriculum we refer to it as SELPH*) is not a fixed way of seeing or being. 

We begin to see with new eyes, a different way of seeing which allows us to take new actions. This opens up new possibilities. We can see it clearly at the moment.

For those who are practitioners and those who are curious learners, we offer a place to come practice. We are offering to bring in two distinctions that are a part of our curriculum and shifts our future. Two of the six speech acts: Declaring and Assessing.
